Over the years, The Sankofa Center has taken many steps to evolve and remain a viable organization—and yet, the organization still saw awareness and fundraising as unrealized opportunities. The Sankofa Center came to us to help chart its best course of action.
The challenge was to communicate a clear brand story about the ways The Sankofa Center funds their operation and delivers upon their mission. We collaborated with Ronnie Shaw, the founder of The Sankofa Center, interviewing him extensively to discover his life's passion, the organization's mission and how he is able to will his vision into reality.
The new logo design gives homage to the traditional Sankofa iconic bird and its meaning: to take what is good from the past and to make positive progress today. The logo celebrates the new brand story of empowering the women of Ghana, preventing HIV through dance and drama education, and encouraging consumers to participate in Sankofa.
We then built upon the success of Sankofa’s fair trade, globally-inspired product line made in Ghana. We developed a brand strategy that leads with a clear message of empowerment for the women of Ghana, followed with a message of how dance and drama education can help prevent the spread of HIV. The final message encourages participation in Sankofa’s mission through purchasing, donating, volunteering or becoming an intern. This brand strategy became the foundation and informed the design direction and new logo.
